I’ve wanted to do an income report for the longest time but I’ve had problems with the programs I use to export beancounter data to excel. I finally got bag export to start working again and I’m thrilled to be able to share my best selling gems and enchant scrolls for the past 2 weeks.

My current primary methods of income are in order of profit: Inscription, Enchanting, Vendor Flipping, Jewelcrafting, and Engie Pets.

In the last 16 days here are my profit from each profession:

1. Glyphs = 14,973g

2. Enchant Scrolls = 13,603g

3. Vendor Flips = 6,297g

4. JC Gems = 5,538g

5. Engie Pets = 2,067g

Total gained in 16 days = 42,478g profit or 2,658g/day

The ways I’m working on improving these numbers is by getting the rare enchanting recipes I talked about before, getting more gem cuts and being more committed to selling engie pets (I honestly just forget to make them sometimes and miss out on very easy money).

Almost all auction house tactics revolve around the undercut. It may be a single copper, a few silver or a few gold, or a freefall drop down to the price of materials. Regardless of the amount or the frequency, most undercuts share a common misconception: that you’re controlling the market with your undercuts. You’re not. Your competitor has the control. By undercutting, you’ve just let your competitor decide your price. You’ve let your competitor set a cap on your profits — and more, you’ve agreed to accept even less with your undercut.

The inscription market sees more than its fair share of this, sometimes on a large scale. The low deposits encourage large number of postings, followed by even larger numbers of cancellations and repostings. Prices fall as each new poster accepts and trumps the previous poster’s prices, until the market falls to the cost of materials and the walls go up. The final wall signals a complete loss of market control.

Once it’s up, it no longer matters who built the wall. If it’s your wall, you can’t raise prices until the competition perched above you goes away. If it’s not your wall, you can’t raise prices on your auctions until someone breaks the wall. Stalemate, and out come the piña coladas.

The event that started all of this, from the first round of undercuts to the market-ending wall, is actually really simple: Your competitor listed his auctions before you did. Your first reaction was to lower your price, and everyone else followed suit. Had your competitor not posted his auctions, you would have raised your prices instead of lowering them.

In the end, the only way to truly control a market is to prevent your competitor from posting. While simple in concept, in reality, this can be a huge undertaking. What we call auction house PvP may be needed to push someone out of a market when he doesn’t want to leave. There are really only a few ways to drive out a competitor and make him take his wall with him: boredom, attrition and starvation.

When a competitor goes overboard building his wall and starts posting hundreds or thousands of auctions at a time, he probably hasn’t considered what’s going to happen to his mailbox 48 hours later. I’ve seen attempts to form glyphs walls using 10 of each glyph. That’s 3,550 glyphs. If they expire (or are canceled), the poster gets to spend 71 minutes digging them out of the mailbox. The geniuses that post 12 pages of single pieces of Infinite Dust will spend an hour restacking them if they were to expire.

Use this wasted time to your advantage. When you see someone going nuts with his postings, start adding new auctions to block his sales, even if they cost you a small amount of gold. If he cancels and relists, you’ve just caused your competitor to lose a couple hours of his time. Repeat this process a few times and his gold-per-hour numbers will quickly be in the toilet, and he may start looking for something to do that doesn’t involve standing by the mailbox all evening.

No deposit, no return

On small items such as glyphs and infinite dust, the auction house deposit fees are insignificant, which led to these markets’ being vulnerable to flooding and continuous cancel-and-relist cycles.

Other markets have much different dynamics. While someone’s posting up 100 Eternal Belt Buckles may look intimidating, forcing them all to expire will cost their owner about 240g in unreturned deposit fees. If he starts canceling and relisting because of your auctions, he gets to pay the deposit fees again. In these markets, forcing the wall to expire isn’t just about reducing your competitor’s income or making him waste his time; it’s a way to take gold directly out of his pocket. This is one way to directly pit your gold reserves against the competition’s.

I’ve seen a number of players leave the jewelcrafting market — even dropping the profession entirely — because they couldn’t grasp that their 48-hour auctions could be turned against them. After days or weeks of expired and relisted auctions, they were oftentimes paying more in deposit fees than they made from selling the gems. The more gems they cut, the more gold they lost.

The embargo: A bottoms-up view of the market

Almost all crafted items in the game come from just a few basic items: ore, herbs, cloth and eternals. Even complicated markets such as inscription, with all of its inks and glyphs and cards, can be boiled down to just a few basic ingredients: adder’s tongue, icethorn and eternal life. That’s it. The glyphs are just red herrings obscuring the real issue: Your competitor isn’t competing with you in selling glyphs; he’s competing with you in buying herbs.

To stop someone from posting glyphs, you need to run him out of ink. To run him out of ink, you have to run him out of herbs. The only way to do this over the long run is to buy all of the herbs by embargoing the auction house.

The embargo works by buying as much of the raw materials as possible to keep them away from the competition. Each stack of herbs is half a dozen glyphs the competition won’t be selling. A hundred stacks is 600 glyphs they won’t be listing. The goal is to allow the undercutters to keep selling their items, but prevent them from crafting replacements. Let them have their low-price walls, since you need them to sell what they already have. Their sales will eventually use up the last of their stockpiles, and the wall will disintegrates on its own. With the wall gone, prices will rise rapidly along with your profits, since you’re the only one left with any herbs. (We can dream, can’t we?)

The embargo starts by picking a price that’s unaffordable for the competition to maintain his selling price. If he’s selling glyphs for 3g, buying any herbs less than 25g a stack will quickly complicate his plans. If he has herb farmers sending him cheap herbs, offer to pay more. By cleaning all of their materials out of the auction house, the battle changes from who has the lowest selling price to who is willing to pay the most for materials. While before you were forced to react to your competitor’s postings, he is now being forced to react to your purchases.

Embargoes aren’t limited to just the herb market, of course. Buy up all of the saronite ore, and the jewelcrafters stop prospecting gems. Buy up all of the eternal earth, and they stop making jewelry and a large source of infinite dust goes away. No eternal water, no Eternal Belt Buckles. No eternal life, no Darkmoon cards. Buy up all the Righteous Orbs, and you don’t have to worry about anyone else making Crusader scrolls. (When you hear gold tycoons talk about “shutting down the market”, this is what they are referring to.)

What to do with it all

A successful embargo could leave you holding on to hundreds or thousands of stacks of herbs and ore as your purchases start to outrun your sales. You don’t want to sell them, because you’d just be breaking your own embargo when a competitor buys them. There comes a point when making the goods go away becomes just as important as buying them in the first place.

One method of disposing of herbs is our dear friend Jessica. The Ink of the Sea from a hundred stacks of herbs down can be traded in for three stacks of Snowfall Ink. A dozen Darkmoon decks will consume a thousand stacks of herbs. You can make a lot of herbs go away with this method and might even make a profit out of it.

Inscription also isn’t the only market for herbs. Rolling an alchemist to make flasks and potions can be a handy way to take excess herbs out of the glyph market, as each flask uses half a stack of herbs. With the introduction of Frozo, the price of Frozen Orbs is closely linked to the price of frost lotus and eternal life, so your flask operation could be running into the back end of your own embargo.

Another common target for embargoing is saronite ore, which has the advantage of having multiple methods of disposal. It can be prospected into gems and dust, and alchemists will take some of the gems to transmute into epics. It can be smelted and sold to a vendor, or it can be transmuted into titanium bars. It takes 16 stacks of saronite ore to make one stack of titanium bars, and 48 stacks will make a stack of titansteel.

I am a huge fan of Reddits section called IAMA where people who are interesting in one way or another allow others to ask them questions.

I found one that was recently posted by a man claiming to bot 150 seperate accounts over 15 computers running 24 hours/day. You can read all the entires and questions here.

He also claims to make 150,000 – 200,000g a day on his bots.

I do not condone the use of bots or selling gold but it’s interesting to see how a person can turn fake currency into real life money for a living.

The beta is providing a lot of tantalizing hints about what professions will be like in the expansion. There have been enormous efforts to reconcile the relative power levels of each profession, and I think the developers have made huge strides in that regard.

Random stats on crafted items are making a comeback through items like Charred Dragonscale Shoulders. While these shoulders are obviously a shaman item, since hunters don’t use their intellect, the random enchant portion will keep the shoulders interesting for many of our dearly beloved totem jockeys. (Heck, inevitably a hunter or two will be wearing them, despite the intellect.) Since intellect will provide direct scaling to spellpower, that random stat bonus could be very interesting.

Multiple skill-ups

We can’t forget that some difficult-to-make recipes can result in more than one skill-up. While I’ve not seen it confirmed yet, I wouldn’t be surprised to see items like the Earthsoul Boots providing multiple skill-ups. Not only is the item itself purple, the recipe requires a leatherworking of 475 to perform.

Engineering

Engineering is getting some pretty nice benefits in Cataclysm. The big news is that engineers will be getting jewelcrafting-like bonuses from cogwheels and hydraulic pumps. These engineer-only enhancements will socket onto their gear. Those of you who’ve been dying to roleplay engineering-based power armor soldiers will finally get your chance.

There are other enhancements for engineer’s gear also, of course. Synapse Springs will enhance intellect for a period of time, and other gadgets are being added all the time. It seems as if Cataclysm will finally be the expansion in which engineers get some stat parity with other professions.

There’s no announced equivalent of the Mechano-hog yet, though, which is kind of a bummer. But, like I’ve said before, Cataclysm is still in the beta; anything could change. We can still hope for a goblin-themed hot rod or something.

Enchanting

Enchanting has always been a workhorse profession. Ever since the days of vanilla World of Warcraft, getting your gear properly enchanted has been the way to signify yourself as a knowledgeable player. In Cataclysm, that’s not really going to change.

What is going to change, however, is the addition of new procs and new enchanting dynamics. I can’t help but hope that some of the proc-based enchants will make it to raiding level, instead of simply being marginalized as “leveling enchants.” Weapon enchants like Landside, though, are almost definitely going to be first-tier raiding enchants, which is at least a little more interesting than plain old raw strength or agility.

Alchemy

Alchemy actually feels a lot like it did in Wrath of the Lich King, with a few relatively minor exceptions. The alchemist’s stone is pretty cool, and its metric ton of stamina proves that the developers are serious about making sure everyone cares about survivability. The transmutation structure for pyrium resembles the metal from Wrath, but the krovalian gold required by engineers could be a nice touch. If the teleportation potion makes it to live servers, we could see alchemists selling quick trips to Deepholm.

These gimmicks aside, though, alchemy is alchemy. You make potions to restore mana and health, and flasks to buff various stats. Like enchanting, alchemy has always been such a staple of successful WoW careers that it’s hard to improve on such a reliable craft.

Blacksmithing

We’re already seeing some awesome gear for blacksmiths to make. Even the poleaxe carries over 500 stamina. Blacksmiths are going to be incredibly busy supplying raiders and PvP players their initial gear, since it seems likely that this crafted gear will be the best stuff available before the first tier of endgame content.

We can only hold on tightly while we wait to see what else will be revealed in the beta. It’s still a little early to feel like we’re seeing final versions of anything, but professions seem like they’ll play a vital role to kickstarting any character into the endgame. This will feel like a repeat to those of us who were busy crafters at the beginning of Wrath, but hopefully the good times will last a little longer this time.

Sometimes, the cheapest way to acquire the quantity of farmed mats you need is to buy them direct from a farmer. Buying them on the auction house is probably more convenient; however, your farmer has to pay the AH cut, and you have to beat your competitors to it. Having a farmer send everything they farm cash on delivery every day is a much more efficient way and has some serious benefits for both sides of the deal. How can you find farmers and convince them to send you goods instead of listing them on the AH?

This is not a one-way deal. You need to make it better for a farmer to ship directly to you than it would be for them to go and post their items for sale. To do that, let’s look at the annoying parts of selling farmed goods.

• Unsold inventory If you list 20 stacks of herbs on the AH, it’s possible that you’ll get undercut and the demand will never outweigh the additional supply, meaning you won’t sell your stock. This costs you your deposit fee (which goes up as you make longer auctions).
• Delayed reward Even when your items sell, they don’t always sell right away.
• Uncertain prices Prices can vary wildly, and you never know how low you’ll have to post stock at to make it move.
• Auction house cut You make 5 percent less than your clients were willing to pay, every time you make a sale.

On a few fronts, it’s clearly better for them to sell direct. No AH cut, and assuming you are buying in volume, no unsold inventory. Many farmers like the idea of not having any volatility in pricing either. That said, they’re currently doing business in a way they’re comfortable with, and there may be a mental barrier for them to overcome.

Finding suppliers

So how do you find farmers? Here are a few techniques I’ve used with moderate success.

• Look through the posted auctions for the day as well as your purchase history (if your addon supports it, like Auctioneer does) to figure out who you have been buying form.
• Advertise in trade that you’re looking for a miner (or herbalist or skinner).
• Go to the zone where whatever you are looking for is farmed, and ask around in general chat if anyone is farming.

Once you find these people, add them to your friends list and get in touch. It’s probably better to watch for them for a few days and hopefully catch them online rather than sending an in-game mail immediately, as they’re much less likely to ask a question before deciding via mail.

Agreeing to a price

When you talk to farmers, be prepared to answer a few questions. Mostly importantly, talk price. All else being equal, price is the most important piece of this negotiation. You need to negotiate knowing that they’re saving 5 percent from the AH cut, but remember that they’re comfortable with what they’re doing now and you may have to overcome that comfort barrier. Still, just pointing the 5 percent out and offering guaranteed sales for the same price they make now has gotten me quite far with my farmers.

Of course, pricing goes up and down on the auction house, and they may challenge you about that. Generally, I tell them that while time is sometimes true, the average price will always be fair market, and they’re just as likely to sell me stock above market price as they are below it. Combine that with the 5 percent savings on the fees, and we’re usually in business.

Keeping suppliers

You want to encourage your new friends to send you as much stock as possible, so I have a few techniques I use to aid with this. For starters, put together a file (I use Google Docs) with all their names, as well as some details like what they farm and how much you pay. Now add some place to keep track of how much stock they send you, and add a little room for a note about what they do with their main on Tuesday nights. If it’s raiding or PvE, I have found that sending them an thank-you flask for especially large orders has gotten people sending me more product in the long run. I also tip Eternal Belt Buckles, meta gems and enchanting mats.

Also, picking up your cash on delivery mail every day is a big boost for your suppliers, as it allows them to be able to count on when they’ll receive the money. Also, if you will be unable to check mail for a few days, remember that COD mail only lasts two days, not the standard 30.

Renegotiation

Sometimes, the market price will change and your costs will need to be lowered. When this happens, remember that it’s going to cost your suppliers gold. Make sure to mention that you wouldn’t be doing this if it weren’t for the AH price change. For this to be worth the risk of losing a good supplier, you probably want to make darn sure it’s not just a temporary bubble of stock. Also, be open to your suppliers renegotiating with you if they feel they deserve a higher price.

Another point: The time to try and get some of the 5 percent they’re saving in AH fees is not during the initial negotiation, it’s after they’ve made a couple of sales to you and maybe you’ve sent them a thank-you tip for a large delivery. At this point, you’re probably their favorite character in the game, and asking for half of the AH fee you’re saving them is most likely to succeed.

I must admit something, after hitting the gold cap in WoW I lost a lot of motivation to continue my daily gold making routine. It goes to show that you need to constantly create new goals to reach once past milestones have been met or you’ll have a lack of focus.

I always enjoyed gold making and the most fun part for me was finding new and better ways to make that gold so I could go from 3,000g/day to 5,000g/day.

Well I think the time has come that I want to get the production cycle back into full swing and take my hand at hitting 1 Million liquid gold in game.

Current Stock and Gold

Currently I have 271,477 liquid gold, I actually bought a chopper yesterday, my only gold sink which cost me 15k so I’m down to 256,477g. My total including all my inventory sits at 369,455g.

In order to hit a million gold I’ll need to make 743,000g and if I’m trying to hit that before Cataclysm that’s roughly 3 months worth of time that’d I’d have to make 247,666g/month or roughly 60,000g a week! Currently my highest income weeks have been about 25,000g profit a week.

I don’t think I can hit this amount with only 4 gold making professions… but I am going to see how well I can do!

I will be reporting back weekly on my progress to hit a million and will keep track of my time spent on each gold making method so I can show which methods make the most gold per effort, also I’ll share my best selling items and profits for each category so you can try it out on your own servers.

Imagine a typical glyph market on a busy realm: dozens of goblins sitting hunched over their steam calculators surrounding the trading pit, each figuring their costs and profits down to the last copper trying to gain an advantage over the others. Thousands of glyphs are posted every hour, most to be canceled and reposted an hour later at even lower prices. Eventually, one of the goblins has a flash of brilliance (or cracks under the strain; the records aren’t clear) and posts all of his glyphs at a loss. The calculation engines grind to a stop, leaving the goblins to stare up at the big board in silence, then at each other. “Now what?”

We call it the wall. One scribe picks a price and tries to hold the entire market to that price. If it holds, the market stops at the wall, and everyone on the other side watches helplessly as sales drop to zero. Sometimes it’s done to drive off competitors; sometimes it’s done to dissuade new competitors from entering the market, or just to burn up excess ink supplies … or even just out of boredom to cause pointless drama, goblin style.

Like all good goblin inventions, the wall appears simple on the outside, but remains complicated (and somewhat explosive) when put into practice. One complication is that there is more actually more than one type of wall.

The low wall

The basic wall is quite simple: Pick a price just above the cost of the ink and post a few bazillion glyphs at that price. Other scribes will be forced to choose between selling below you at a loss and not selling at all. In theory, this locks the other scribes out of the market and eventually forces them to go find new professions. Once they’re gone, you can raise prices and rake in the gold. Simple, right?

While this sounds easy in practice, there are a few complications. First, you’re not making any gold while this is going on, so you’ll be forced to live off your other profession until this battle is over. (You do have another profession, don’t you?) Second, you’re going to need a lot of ink if you’re going to take all of the sales on the server, and any interruption in your herb supply will cause the wall to come tumbling down and all your work to be lost. Last, scribes are a notoriously stubborn lot, and you’re probably not the only one building a wall. While you are waiting for the other guy to give up and quit, he’s waiting for you to give up and quit. You could both be waiting for a while.

The high wall

A refinement of the endless crafting and undercutting to maintain the wall, the high wall is not designed to have the cheapest glyphs but to have the least cheapest glyphs. (This makes perfect sense to a goblin.) Your prices are still low, but you’ve left just enough room under your prices for the other wall-builders to carry on crafting and selling their zero-profit glyphs. Your second wall is there to prevent prices from rising. Your plan isn’t to sell your glyphs, but to keep relisting the same set of glyphs every two days to force the competition to continue crafting their thousands of glyphs with no hope of actually making any gold at it. (In fact, sold glyphs become an annoyance, as they have to be replaced.)

This arrangement leads to an interesting collaboration between you and your competitor. He’s trying to burn you out by taking all of the sales. You’re trying to burn him out by giving him all of the sales. The battle becomes a staring contest between the low wall scribes (working feverishly in the sun stacking bricks) and the high wall scribes (sipping piña coladas on the veranda watching them work).

The fallback wall

If you’re on a server where you’re up against multiple wall-building scribes, there may be little point in adding your own glyphs to the battle. Stacking bricks in the sun doesn’t sound like much fun, and you’re really not in the mood for more piña coladas. (OK, maybe just one.)

Over the course of the day, buyers are constantly buying random glyphs. Occasionally, a cluster of buyers will all buy the same glyph, punching a hole in both walls. When this happens, the next buyer is stuck paying the next highest price, and opportunity knocks for whichever scribe has that listing.

One way to take advantage of this is what we call the fallback wall. Essentially, you post one of each glyph at 40g and wait. If there’s a hole in the wall, you make a quick 40g from the next sale. You may even get multiple sales at that price, until one of the builders wakes up and patches the hole. Despite the comparatively low number of sales, each fallback glyph that does sell will equal the profits from several dozen wall-price sales (without the need for several dozen bottles of ink).

On some servers, you may see multiple fallback walls, each higher than the last. This seemingly irrational behavior is from scribes betting that the hole will be big enough to remove not only the cheap wall glyphs, but also competitors’ fallback listings. Glyph prices can soar to extremely high prices on occasion, and there’s nothing like a 129g sale to brighten your day (or ruin someone else’s).

The high-low strategy

Almost all scribes use addons to automate their auctions (Auctioneer, Quick Auctions, etc.). Posting, canceling and reposting thousands of glyphs is a Herculean task to do manually, and identifying and plugging holes in the wall would requires hours of wading through your inventory and finding which one is running low. The reliance on automated posting means that most players don’t even see their listings … or yours.

High-low was originally designed to break overconfident Auctioneer users, although it can have some success against Quick Auctions users. The first step is identifying your target competitor’s thresholds and fallbacks. Using high-low postings, you would post two glyphs, the first just under his threshold to block him from posting (or force him up to his fallbacks), and one just under his fallback to steal the next sale from the hole. Against an Auctioneer user tied to market price listings, this can play merry havoc with his postings.

The wide price range of your postings also poisons his Auctioneer database with worthless information. A combination of 4g and 50g auctions may combine to create an item with a “market value” of 27g, a purely imaginary number. A competitor’s Auctioneer may refuse to post any auctions at all if your first listing is too far below this market value, locking him out of the market even though the glyphs are selling well at high prices.

The Prisoner’s Dilemma

Once a glyph market matures into wide scale wall-building — or degenerates to that point, depending on which side of the wall you’re standing on — it rapidly becomes a twisted version of the classic Prisoner’s Dilemma. Scribes have the choice of posting at low prices, cutting their own profits as well as their opponent’s, or posting at high prices to increase their profits but allowing their opponents to do the same. Given the aggressive and competitive nature of many World of Warcraft players, many will choose the option that causes the most harm to their competitor, even if that option brings harm to themselves. This is an option missing from the classic Prisoner’s Dilemma, creating a new puzzle: Goblin’s Dilemma.

Making gold with enchanting is either my 1st or 2nd favourite profession to make gold with because once you have a system in place you’re only spending a few minutes a day and raking in a nice profit.

Most of the scrolls that are popular can be bought directly from Vanessa Sellers in Dalaran making it easy to jump into the enchanting market. Unfortunately this also allows new competitors to rapidly set up a business and you’ll be in undercutting wars. One way to pull in a lot more gold with enchanting is to do a little hard work and find the rare and hard to get enchants that not many new enchanters even know about.

Some members in our private gold making forum shared a list recently of super rare items and it gave me the idea for this post.

In this article I will provide a list of formulas for enchants that aren’t sold by Vanessa Sellers which are popular sellers and therefore command a high price and profit margin.

List of Rare Enchanting Formulas

There are two areas we are going to be focusing on here, the heirloom market and enchants that are BoP from raids.

The heirloom market is huge, while most players wouldn’t bother enchanting items they are leveling up with since gear is replaced so rapidly, heirloom enchants can be placed on an item from level one and stay active till 80. Some of these enchants give HUGE bonuses and therefore players are willing to cough up a lot of gold to get that advantage while leveling.

Unfortunately most of these lucrative heirloom enchants are very rare world drops but blizzard made most of them BoE and are sold via the auction house. This is another opportunity for non-enchanters to make gold as you can add these rare BoE enchants to your snatch list and if someone not knowingly posts it at a low price you can snatch it up and resell on the AH for thousands more.

Heirloom Enchants

1. Formula: Enchant Weapon – Fiery Weapon (BoE)

Source: Drop – Blackrock Depths – Pyromancer Loregrain

Farmable, about a 17% drop rate and you could get this in about 30 minutes of farming.

2. Formula: Enchant Weapon – Icy Chill (BoE)

Source: Drop – Winterspring – Anguished Highborne

Farmable, 4% drop

This enchant may seem like garbage on first glance, who cares about snaring a mob and debuffing it’s attack power but this is highly sought after for Hunters to kite with.

3. Formula: Enchant Weapon – Lifestealing (BoE)

Source: Drop – Scholomance – Spectral Researcher

Farmable, 8% drop

4. Formula: Enchant Chest – Greater Stats (BoE)

Source: World Drop (Outlands)

Not Farmable, this is a really rare enchant and you’ll need to add it to your snatch list and hope you find it for sale.

5. Formula: Enchant Weapon – Crusader (BoE)

Source: Eastern and Western Plaugelands – Scarlet Archmage and Scarlet Spellbinder

Very low drop rate, 1.5% chance. You’re best bet is to find this on the auction house.

6. Formula: Enchant Weapon – Spellpower (BoE)

Source: Molten Core – Random Drop

Very low drop rate, <1% chance from bosses only. Find this on the auction house via snatch list.

7. Formula: Enchant Weapon – Healing Power (BoE)

Source: Molten Core – Random Drop

Very low drop rate, <1% chance from bosses only. Find this on the auction house via snatch list.

It’s only 1 spellpower lower than the above enchant and since they are both super rare you’ll be able to sell for a high price.

8. Formula: Enchant Weapon – Agility (BoP)

Source: Reputation – Timbermaw Hold – Friendly

This would be pretty fast to obtain and it’s a popular enchant, go out and get this one right now.

9. Formula: Enchant 2H Weapon – Agility (BoP)

Same as above, Timbermaw Hold – Friendly Rep

Feral druids and hunters particularly like this enchant.

9. Formula: Enchant Weapon – Strength (BoP)

Source: Reputation – Thorium Brotherhood – Friendly

Another fast reputation to grind since you only need friendly, and a popular enchant.

10. Formula: Enchant Weapon – Mighty Intellect (BoP)

Source: Reputation – Throium Brotherhood – Revered

Will take a while to grind this one, some people on wowhead report being able to grind it out within a day.

11. Formula: Enchant Weapon – Mighty Spirit (BoP)

Source: Reputation – Thorium Brotherhood – Honored

Might as well pick this one up too as you’ll have the rep, Warlocks and Priests prefer spirit.

12. Formula: Enchant Chest – Major Health (BoE)

Source: Vendor – Qia in Winterspring

Easiest enchant on the list to get, go buy it and even pick up a couple extra to flip for profit, I have a list of all vendor items to flip for profit if you’re interested in this gold making method.

13. Formula: Enchant Chest – Major Resilience (BoE)

Source: World Drop (Outlands)

Very rare drop, this enchant cannot be put onto heirloom items but any PvP twinks above level 35 will want this enchant for 39,49,59,69 BG’s

High Level Enchants

Another market that has high barriers to entry are enchants dropped from bosses. These enchants cannot be put onto heirloom items but the enchant effect they have is sought after by even level 80’s.

1. Formula: Enchant Weapon – Mongoose (BoP)

Source: Drop – Karazhan – Moroes

A level 75+ DK should be able to solo Moroes, and level 80 classes capable of tanking. Otherwise bring a partner with you and grab this recipe. A great seller and 100% drop rate.

2. Formula: Enchant Weapon – Blade Ward (BoP)

Source: Drop – Ulduar – random boss drop

Everyone I talk to says Ulduar is a raid that no one likes going back to, this will be a pretty hard enchant to procure but is a good seller.

3. Formula: Enchant Weapon – Blood Draining (BoP)

Same as above. Drop – Ulduar – random boss drop

I will be picking up as many of these enchants that I can and I’ll report back on the amount of profit I can get from them. It’s important to look for any edge you can get in your professions as a lot of players won’t spend the extra effort tracking down recipes or grinding rep which equals much higher profits for those who do the hard work.

Good luck with getting these recipes, make sure you add the BoE ones to your snatch list and buy them up at a reasonable price, or flip them if you aren’t an enchanter. With its myriad of materials and finished items, inscription can be one of the more complicated professions for a crafter who’s trying to track his expenses and profits (or even to know if he’s made a profit at all). Herb prices have changed dramatically over the past several months, dropping to record lows as farming bots proliferate and climbing just as dramatically during the ban wave that followed. After months of being spoiled by a market overflowing with cheap herbs, many players stopped paying attention to what they were paying to make each item. Now that herb prices are climbing, it’s left a number of sellers scrambling to reprice their items and to take a closer look at what they’re paying for their supplies.

Glyphs and Ink of the Sea

Everything that inscription makes can be traced back to a stack of herbs, so all item prices can be calculated from the price of the herb. Each stack of the “good” Northrend herbs — Adder’s Tongue, Icethorn and Lichbloom — will produce one bottle of Snowfall Ink and six Ink of the Sea (IotS). Each stack of the lower-quality herbs — Goldclover, Deadnettle and Tiger Lily — will produce five Ink of the Sea and half of a Snowfall. While seeming the inferior choice, these lesser herbs will often sell at a substantial discount and may be more efficient if found in large quantities; two stacks of Tiger Lily will produce 10 IotS and a Snowfall, a much higher yield than a single stack of the more expensive varieties. Lichbloom and Goldclover will usually sell for higher prices to flask makers, so they are seldom milled for ink. Given the large number of Adder’s Tongue nodes in Sholazar Basin (256), it is the most common herb used for milling.

The price of a stack of herbs will vary widely from server to server based on the number of herb farmers (both human and bot), along with how aggressive scribes and alchemists are when buying them. If there are a lot of bots, herb prices may be below 9g. (I’ve seen them at 2g, below vendor price.) During ban waves, bot activity will drop and herb production will rely on the small number of remaining human farmers, causing prices to return their regular 18g price and often higher, even doubling again to 35g for a single stack.

For many professions, a rise of this scale would have a drastic effect on the market, eliminating profits and making many items too expensive to craft or sell. Inscription, on the other hand, takes these changes in stride. Even a massive increase in the cost of materials has a minor effect on the final prices. With herbs at 9g a stack and each stack producing six bottles of ink, each Ink of the Sea costs 1g50s. At 18g, the ink will cost 3g. At 30g, it rises to 5g. Even doubling the materials cost only takes away a gold piece or two in profit, a minor amount when the glyphs are selling for 10g or 20g (or higher). Now that the double-ink glyphs have been eliminated, the cost of each glyph is simply the price of the ink and a piece of parchment.

Vellum mispricing

A stack of herbs makes 12 armor vellums, two from each bottle of ink. With 9g herbs, your cost is 1g15s (including parchment). With 18g herbs, the price rises to 1g90s. Again, we see that doubling the price of the raw materials has only a small effect on the price of the finished product.

Weapon vellums use three times the ink as armor vellums, however, causing the materials costs to rise sharply to 4g90s each. It’s quite common to find these at a discount on the auction house from undercutters who have forgotten this and priced them the same as their armor vellums.

The Snowfall trap

In addition to the regular Ink of the Sea, milling also produces Snowfall Ink, which is used to make many of the inscription items. Many scribes who focus only on glyphs will sell their Snowfall Ink to make back some of what they paid for their herbs. Instead of paying 18g for herbs (which makes 3g ink), they will sell the Snowfall Ink for 8g and effectively reduce the cost of their herbs to 10g. This drops the price of their ink from 3g to 1g67s for each bottle.

While this looks as if it should lead to an extra 8g profit from each set of six glyphs, many scribes instead use this gold to lower their thresholds and allow for even deeper undercuts. By selling their glyphs for 1g33s less than they did before, they end up giving back the gold they made from selling the ink, losing both that profit and the potential gold they could have made from using the ink to craft other items.

Few scribes pause to think about who they are selling their ink to: other scribes. Alarm bells would be going off in other professions if a competitor suddenly started buying up your products, but many scribes base their entire business plans around it. If your competitor is buying your goods, it’s often a sign that he’s reselling it for a profit (or at least thinks he can). Many scribes who concentrate on low-priced glyphs will sell off hundreds or thousands of stacks of Snowfall Ink in their careers with little to show for it, and certainly with little idea of the potential fortune they’ve handed over to their competitors. (We saw the same thing when jewelcrafters started selling Dragon’s Eyes, not stopping to consider why other jewelcrafters were willing to pay so much for them.)

Snowfall Ink

Snowfall Ink, the joker in the deck for determining costs, is used for crafting three items: off-hand frills, Runescrolls of Fortitude and Darkmoon cards.

There are two epic off-hand frills made from Snowfall Ink, both for casters: Faces of Doom and the Iron-Bound Tome. Each requires five Snowfall Ink. If you make your own ink, your cost is about 30g for the basic materials for each one. These books routinely sell for over 200g each, making far more profit than selling the ink would have made. A scribe who buys Snowfall Ink will pay 70g to make each book, which is still an excellent source of income.

Each bottle of ink can also make five Runescrolls of Fortitude, which are extremely useful when there’s no priest in the party. Made from regular parchments, these cost you 40s each, and you come out ahead if they sell for more than 2g each. It’s quite common for these to sell for multiple times that amount.

Darkmoon cards

Using your own Snowfalls, Darkmoon cards cost 69g to make (three eternals and some ink). If you’re buying someone else’s, the price rises to 117g for each card. While seemingly expensive to make, each card has an average selling price close to 200g when produced in large numbers and assembled into completed decks and trinkets. In this case, each bottle of Snowfall generates more than 20g in profits, far more than its regular price and often more than what the glyphs from the same stack of herbs sell for.

When focusing on making ink for cards, there are a couple of different ways to look at the numbers. For card makers, it requires six stacks of herbs (plus three eternals) to get the Snowfalls for make each card, so producing a standard 32-card set of decks will require 192 stacks of herbs and produce 1,056 “extra” IotS for glyphs. A high-volume glyph maker crafting thousands of glyphs will essentially receive a full set of Darkmoon decks for every 1,056 glyphs he makes, which will make him far more than the 1,536g he would have made from selling off his inks (and probably more than he made from the glyph themselves).

If you really, really, really don’t like selling glyphs, it is possible to skip them entirely and trade your unwanted Ink of the Sea to Jessica for more Snowfall Ink. With this method, each card now only requires four stacks of herbs instead of six — the four stacks mill into four Snowfalls and 24 Ink of the Sea, 20 of which are traded to make the two missing Snowfalls. While this method is a bit more expensive than buying the ink from another scribe, it does have the advantage of not giving your competition a couple of thousand gold pieces every time you make a set of cards.

Another addon has been developed by fellow gold making guru Zerotorescue, the developer of the awesome Mail Opener Addon.

This addon is a tweek to the Quick Auctions interface, it’ll add a toggle check mark beside the post button, what this does is make quick auctions continuously try to repost auctions.

Instantly Undercut Competitors

Quick auctions will only post auctions if you’ve been undercut or have no current stock up and the price is above your threshold, well if you had a continuous loop of trying to post auctions that would mean when you go for your next posting cycle and you have been undercut quick auctions will then undercut that lowest auction by the amount you set in the config.

Here’s the description Zero wrote on his addon page:

“This addon is a plugin for Quick Auctions that adds a checkbox to the auction house posting frame with which you can toggle continuous scanning and posting of Quick Auctions. It saves you the effort of hitting the post button whenever a scan has finished. Sadly because this Quick Auctions button doesn’t have a name and it’s function is private, this action can’t be macroed but this addon manages to obtain the correct button and simulates a click on it.”

Things to Keep in Mind

1. This addon was developed with blizzards API, so it is consistent with the terms of use and should not get you banned. However I would think there is some risk involved in using this so please beware… I will be trying this out though and I’ll let you know if I get action against my account.

2. Given the nature of how this works, QA only checks the posts of items you currently have in your inventory so it’d be hard to use this with glyphs. I could see using this with the most popular glyphs then just leaving the toggle on and you’ll remain the lowest price until it goes below your threshold.

3. If you plan on using this addon for certain items make sure that you change your quantity to post. For example I usually post 4 of each glyph, but if I ran this set up it’d try to post 4 of the same glyph everytime I was undercut. I think you’d want to set this to post only 1 of each auction if you plan to leave this on autopilot and make sure that you have sufficient quantity in your bags.

In my honest opinion I’d give this addon a few days before trying out or monitor it’s use while testing it.. Zero’s other addon the Mail Opener one I mentioned above had a lot of players saying “oh this is against the rules you’ll get banned!” because it opens all your mail for you which should require a click.. but the addon has been out for a couple months now with thousands of downloads and no complaints of bans from its use.
