Calculators are used in every aspect of making gold, anywhere from calculating your gold/hour rate at a farming spot to pricing out profit margins based on your cost of supplies and sale price.
I have used the default windows calculator for all my needs, and although I play in windowed mode it still can be quite annoying to have my screen covered up and not being able to view the calculator if I click back into WoW or press hotkeys as your windows focus has changed.
There is an in-game addon you can install for world of warcraft that allows you to use this simple calculator without having to alt-tab or use the windows default one. They also made the calculator so that when it’s active your num-pad is bound to the keys then switched back to your normal bindings after (but who uses their numpad for bindings??)
Another great feature is you can input calculations by typing in the chat box /calc 2 + 2 and it’ll return 4 or you can do something like /calc (3.5g +50s) * 2 which will return 8g
The calculator is called Xcalc and you can download it over here at curse.

Have you ever needed help with gold making and wish you had a community of experienced gold makers to get advice from? Right when you need it?
WoWConfidential is proud to announce the launch of our WoW Gold forums and community where you can get advice and tips from players who have hit the gold cap multiple times and even hit a million gold.
The best part about it is this advice is tailored to your specific gold making situation and gold goals.
- New player trying to afford an epic mount?
- Need help setting up add-ons, macros and a gold making system?
- Making a decent amount of gold but need that extra edge to hit the gold cap?
- Saving up gold for Cataclysm?
Benefits of a Community
As the author of this blog I get lots of emails from readers, I wish I could answer them all but it has come to a point where I wouldn’t get anything done if I did.
With the launch of the forum, this provides a place where I can offer 1 on 1 advice and help.
Back when I began my gold making journey I was lucky enough to get invited to a private gold making chat channel. Through this chat channel I met some amazing people who had hundreds of thousands of gold when I could barely keep 1k in my pocket. The simple act of just being around these players and hearing how they play the markets gave me insight into what I was doing wrong and after a few months I hit the gold cap myself.
The other benefit was I found this community as a fun place to “hang out” while I was doing something boring like milling, crafting or just had down time. It’s great to have a community of like minded people with similar goals as you to discuss strategies and share stories.
It is this community I invite you to take part in at our WoW Gold Making Forum.
Why A Paid Forum?
1. Private information and ability to act on strategies before they are released to the public
I will continue to post in-depth gold making articles for free on the site, however a forum is a natural place to discuss and fine tune any new gold making strategies and to talk about speculation of an upcoming patch and how that could effect markets. Having the forum as a paid area ensures that the gold making discussions we share there are kept between members only and isn’t broadcasted around to the WoW community. This gives us time to react to markets and exploit gold making opportunities much faster than other players.
2. I will have much more time to spend 1 on 1 with people
I appreciate every email I receive and all the fans of the site, but with so many projects on the go I just can’t devote the time I’d like to helping every person or else I’d get no work done which = no money. In a paid forum community I can spend much more time to give advice and help out the members.
3. It provides real value
Gold guides on the market provide information, but getting advice tailored to your situation and server economy can help you along much faster. Reading a gold guide made by someone is much different than having a discussion with them where you can ask questions or more depth on the points you need further understanding on.
4. Well Moderated and Not Spammy
When people pay for a service it tends to draw more serious conversations and it’ll be much easier to keep the forum clean, to the point and helpful. I will be able to spend the time to make sure each players questions are answered while reducing redundant or frequently asked questions to specific threads.
How Much Does it Cost?
The forum has launched today (July 27, 2010) and will be offered at a reduced rate of $6.95 a month until Sunday August 1st, 2010. At which point the price will go up to regular price. Any members who sign up at the discounted rate can keep the reduced rate for as long as they are signed up members.
You can cancel your subscription at any time.
How To Join
1. You can register over at our forums here.
2. After you register, there will be a link that says “Complete Registration – Click Here to Pay for Forum Access” click that to upgrade your account for full access.
3. Click from the drop down box Monthly $6.95 US, this will bring you through paypal to make your payment, which can also accept credit card transactions.
4. After your paypal transaction goes through you’ll have instant access to start posting and reading the forums.
Hope to See You There
I look forward to getting to know each of you, there is an area to ask for advice, to post your own gold making “journal” and various other areas for us to discuss gold making in WoW.

So, alchemy in Cataclysm is starting to look pretty damned good. (Granted, all of the trade skills are looking good in Cataclysm, but I’m writing about alchemy this week.) Alchemy is one of the most stable crafts between expansions, though. You have your standard potions — intellect, damage, healing, mana, health, stuff like that — as well as your alchemist-only items like alchemist’s stones.
Things get a little more exciting in Cataclysm, though. One of the most interesting potions I’ve seen so far is the Potion of Deephome. On use, it teleports the user to Deephome. It’s a pretty neat effect, but it definitely makes me curious about Deephome. The dungeon finder tool is incredibly effective for teleporting players inside dungeons, so I don’t see why your acerage alchemist would have to use the potion. Still, for sheer flavor, it’s fun to see potions doing more than just buffing stats. I think that’s a nice little side effect that’s been a long time coming.
Shadowspirit Diamond
The big gem transmute this time around is the shadowspirit diamond. The shadowspirit diamond can be cut about a dozen different ways to suit your metagem needs. (But that’s for a different post.) The diamond itself doesn’t seem all that difficult to make — if you’ve got a dozen other gems just sitting around. To create a shadowspirit diamond, you currently need:
These seem to be the green-quality gems for Cataclysm, though, and those do tend to stack up once the epic versions become available. Much like Wrath of the Lich King, the materials will be a little tough to come by, I think, at the opening of the expansion. Give it a few content patches, though, and you’ll be happy to upgrade 18 green gems to a single metagem.
Metal transmutes
The two metal transmutations for Cataclysm are Pyrium Bar and Krovalian Gold. Pyrium uses four elementium bars and 8 volatile earth. Krovalian gold takes eight pyrium bars. So, to get that into perspective, it would take 24 elementium bars and 64 volatile earth. Pyrium bars are also sought after for blacksmithing, and each blacksmithing recipe tends to take between 10 and 20 of the bars.
Krovalian gold, however, exists in a more rarified air. Krovalian gold is the essential reagent for engineer’s killshades. Each set of killshades require two bars of krovalion gold. We don’t know of any other trade skill that requires the gold for anything, but I imagine something else must by the end of the expansion. Still, that means that krovalion gold bars will be fairly expensive on the auction house, but won’t always have a consistent demand. I kind of expect it to become a trade chat item, that way. Engineers will gather their own materials and offer to pay for the transmute on the trade channel.
Alchemist Stone
The Lifebound Alchemist Stone continous to look just as sexy as when we first saw it. I suspect a lot of tanks might be looking at alchemy a little more seriously at the opening of Cataclysm, considering the epic amount of stamina being sported on this trinket. With an additional blue socket and 233 mastery, the Lifebound Alchemist Stone’s going to go a long way to make sure alchemists get a leg up on their equipment checklist.
The stone’s not too beastly to make, considering the enormous advantage conveyed by its itemization. It takes about a dozen herbs of various sorts totalling about 36 herbs. More shocking, though, are the 50 volatile life required to create the stone. I’ll say that again; the Lifebound Alchemist Stone requires 50 volatile life. That may sound like a lot, but we don’t really have a great concept of how many volatlie life you’ll find around the expansion. If you get a life every time you hit a herb, 50 won’t be a big number at all.
Upgrading gems
There are, of course, transmutations to turn green gems into blue gems. I’d considered listing them, but instead I’ll link you over to MMO-Champion. We don’t have any certainty yet about what those gems will be used for (aside from jewelcrafting), so I don’t want to burn you out on news that we don’t know. Still, I suspect we’ll see about the same stat combinations on each color gem as we did in Wrath and even The Burning Crusade.
In closing
The last big news about new stuff for alchemy comes from the guild perks information. The guild perk Chug-a-Lug confirms that it affects both potions and cauldrons. That could just be the designers being surprisingly thorough and including the cauldrons from The Burning Crusade. But the tiny little part of me that still wants a pony is hoping and praying we might see feast-like cauldrons in Cataclysm. It would just make life so much easier.
Finally, alchemy will have the same kind of stat-buffing potions we have in Wrath. I didn’t delve into them because they’re stat buffs. And while numbers are fun and exciting, they don’t have a lot of context yet. We’ll revisit the stat buff potions a little later in the beta.

I’ve been doing a lot of experimenting with buying items from vendors and selling them for a profit on the auction house.
I started off selling almost anything I could find from vendors – food, equipment, reagents, arrows, recipes, pets, trade goods (resilient parchment, star wood), mining pick, etc.. If a vendor sold it I probably tried to flip it for a profit.
I have trimmed the list down to items that sold consistently and for a nice mark up.
Flipping vendor items for profit is probably one of the best ways to make gold when you have no professions or little start up capital. I’ve used it in combination with WoW Schools guide to really give me an advantage on route to my next gold cap.
You can literally buy recipes and items for 20 silver and turn around and flip it on the AH for 60 gold.
The trick here to make it the most profitable and worth your time is to follow an efficient route so you get all the key recipes, many people even know that recipes sell from the vendor but would rather just buy it from the auction house for a mark up to save them the hassel of traveling. Our advantage is we can take 1 trip out to a remote location and pick up multiple of that item, store it in the bank and sell it off when there’s no or low supply.
Items that are far are either incorporated into a route or must be sold at a high enough mark up to justify the travel time as some of these items are sold in limited quantity and you can only get one while you are out there.
List of Profitable Vendor Items to Flip on AH
Here’s a list of the vendor items I’ve successfully sold and how much profit I’ve gained from each item. Some items don’t have a profit amount yet as I’ve yet to sell them but they were easy to obtain (from same vendor as another profitable item) I’ll include my spreadsheet so you can input any other items you find and delete items you find don’t sell on your server.
Some items sell right away while others may have a 50% sell through rate. I’ve sold some of these items multiple times (like star wood, I sell about 5/day) I will include a report of my best selling vendor items in a future post so you see how much stock of each of these items I move a week.
Experiment with your pricing as well. I usually start off with the market price and start doubling it after every successful sale. A lot of these items have sold each time and I increase the cost by 10g each time. I find that most recipes can usually get around 50-70g, and some rare ones like the Admirals Hat recipe can go for upwards of 500g.

Maps
Here’s the route I take and the map for each zone of the vendor locations, bookmark this page and follow these stages each time you need to restock. Click to zoom each picture.
Outlands Run
Start in Shattrath > Terokkar > Shadowmoon Valley

Hellfire > Zangarmarsh > Dip down to Nagrand > Blade’s Edge Mountains

End at Netherstorm

Dalaran to Kalimdor Run
Dalaran > Teleport to Orgrimmar > Fly to Azshara

Winterspring > Moonglade > The Barrens

Stonetalon > Desolace > Thunder Bluff

Dustwallow Marsh > Feralas > Thousand Needles

End at Tanaris > Hearth back to town.

Eastern Kingdoms Route
Start at Undercity > Tirisfal Glades > Western Plaugelands

Fly back or hearth to Brill (Undercity) take zepplin to Stranglethorn
Stranglethorn > Booty Bay > Fly to Swamp of Sorrows

Alterac Mountains
2 items sell here, one that sells for about 150g profit so it’s worth the trip. I haven’t found an efficient way to incorporate it into the routes so for now I fly from Undercity to Tarren Mill walk east, just past river and follow path up mountain, takes 7 minutes to get there and visit both vendors.

Vendor Profit Spreadsheet
Here’s my spreadsheet I used to track everything, it’s a little messy but it’s a good starting point to keep track of your profits, inventory, and a place you can put in new items that aren’t in this list yet.
That wraps up this article. If you know of any other good vendor flips not listed here I’d be interested to hear what is successful for you in the comments below so I can add it to the list.
If you need more gold and want to leverage this method with another gold making guide I’d recommend picking up WoW Schools guide as this works well with it and teaches other flips.
Be sure to subscribe to our free RSS feed or bookmark the homepage (ctrl+d) to know when the next article is coming out! Recommend this article to friends/guild mates, in forums or tweet it as it would really help out the site to get some exposure
Good luck on your profits.

Vendor Items To Flip For Profit – Maps and Routes an article by: WoWConfidential Gold Making in WoW

I’ve been making gold steadily with inscription now since October 2009 and have just recently heard about the off-hand Rituals of the New Moon.
The reason being is the recipe to craft this item only drops from mobs and is Bind on pick up, it is also a level 70 item and not too popular.
However the item has one very interesting use that makes it a decent seller, it transforms you into a Black, Red, Grey or White wolf for 2 minutes (with a 10 minute cooldown), there are 4 versions of the book for each colour of wolf.
A member in the gold making chat – Debussy – recently tried to see if he could make a profit selling these and here was his results, keep in mind it costs about 30g to craft this item:

630g profit in an hour of selling isn’t too bad!
Rituals of the New Moon Recipe Drop
The recipe is rather easy to obtain, the drop rate on wowhead says it’s 3% but since it only drops for scribes this figure is unreliable since it takes into account the drop % on people who can never obtain it.
The technique drops in Grizzly Hills off of any Villager, Trapper, Defender, or Hunter within Silverbrook. It took me about 5 minutes to get it to drop, others in the wowhead comments have reported anywhere from 5-20 minutes to farm it.
Trick To Selling The Book
The problem with selling this book outright is that not many people are even aware it exists! The way that Debussy was able to make such a nice profit in a short amount of time was by advertising in trade chat some unique sales pitches to create some buzz over the books.
These pitches are meant to be as a joke but draw attention to the fact that it’ll transform you into a wolf, here are some examples of ones talked about in our channel:
“OMG I’m a worgen and Cata isn’t out yet. I’ve can be 4 different colors with [Rituals of the New Moon]!!!!”
“Hate Twilight and all it stands for? Want to torment them up close and personal? Infiltrate the lair with [Rituals of the New Moon]! 4 Colors to choose from! Get them at the AH!!”
“GO TEAM JACOB! Become one of the pack with [Rituals of the New Moon]! 4 Colors to chose from! Get yours at the AH now before it’s too late!”
Give it a try and see how many sales you can get. The problem with this being a long term profit strategy is that you need to advertise a lot in trade chat to actually make sales, but if you’re in town crafting anyways why not give it a go?
